Indra is adapting the ticket machines and automatic gates of the suburban train system to allow payment using cell phones
OTLIS (Lisbon Metropolitan Area Transport Operators) has entrusted Indra with this pilot project in Lisbon's subway system, which will subsequently be extended to the city's other public transport systems.
One of the adaptations made by Indra will enable subway ticket booths to sell fares directly via cell phone. Fares will be saved on a SIM card using NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.
The company has also adapted the subway's automatic gates to open when the cell phone with the record of the fare payment is presented for validation. Thus, to use public transport, passengers will simply hold their cell phones up to the ticket reader or the platform access gate.
Indra currently employs more than 400 professionals in Portugal, where it has had a base since 1997
The second phase of the project will revolutionize the traditional model for selling fares, reducing regular trips to sales points as passengers will be able to purchase OTLIS tickets directly using their cell phones.
