Brazil's Companhia de Docas do Espírito Santo (CODESA) is now operating with Indra's Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS), which enhances safety and improves the efficiency with which moorings are managed.
The Global consulting and technology company has transformed Brazil's Vitoria into the most technologically advanced port in the country.
The project is part of Brazil's Port System Modernization Plan backed by the Secretariat of Ports of the Presidency of the Republic (SEP/PR). This plan also includes Indra's modernization of Santos, Brazil's main port and one of the world's largest.
Indra's VTMIS solution is based on the proprietary iMARE system and affords greater safety when managing the movements of vessels within the waters of the port of Vitoria. The solution also streamlines mooring management, resulting in increased capacity and greater efficiency when coordinating maritime operations. This service improvement contributes to increasing competitiveness and the capacity to attract major shipping carriers to generate new sources of income.
The system incorporates all the information sent by radars, cameras, buoys, weather stations and automatic vessel identification systems so that operators can unmistakably pinpoint each boat's position on a digital map and access the data regarding its cargo, origin or route. The system also receives all up-to-the-minute information on sea conditions and can communicate with the ship's bridge to coordinate entries or exits.
The system can also send information to the port's single window for digital, paperless management of all the administrative processing necessary for mooring and managing cargo.
According to Cristiano Alves, Director of Transport Operations and Defense at Indra in Brazil: "Securing precise supervision over traffic increases the rotation of the entry of cargo ships into Vitoria's port harbor, which translates to swifter mooring intervals and the resulting increase of vessel traffic in the channel”.
The director also emphasized the value of statistical data that the system stores, explaining that they “help the Port Authority manage billing and income forecasting”.
CODESA chairman Luis Claudio Montenegro added that "Vitoria will be the first public port in the country to operate with VTMIS. This system enables us to fully control the access channel and mouth. All data, including information on the winds, tides, weather, current, navigability, are managed with precision by the system".
Montenegro explained that the next step will entail "creating a work group to address changes in port access channel management. CODESA will propose that its national peers seek out a new model in which the port authority will have greater involvement in these decisions, though to do so it is important that all ports have an advanced system such as the VTMIS at Vitoria", concluded the chairman of Docas do Espírito Santo.
Indra's VTMIS system was presented to the port authorities during the First International Conference on Ports held in Vitoria from the 3rd to the 5th of July. This meeting was organized by CODESA in partnership with Brazil's IFES (Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo) to discuss the scenario, perspectives and political changes that will be implemented in global port maritime shipping. During these dates, Luis Claudio Montenegro hosted a technical visit to the Indra-implemented VTMIS Operations Center with Brazilian Secretary of Ports (SEP), Luiz Otávio Oliveira Campos, together with other SEP directors and important Brazilian port leaders.
Over 70 ports with Indra technology
The company has also carried out a number of different technology projects elsewhere, including terminals in Spain, the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Morocco, Poland and Senegal. In Poland, an Indra technology solution controls all traffic in Polish waters in the Baltic Sea, covering management of the 12 largest ports in the country and the mouth of the River Oder.
