Indra, Spanish National Innovation award 2020

Indra, one of the main global technology and consultancy companies, has been awarded the National Innovation Prize by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation in the category of Great Company for "its importance in various sectors from the perspective of digitalization, its position at the forefront of R+D+I and for playing the essential role in driving and promoting innovation in other companies, with special emphasis on SMEs in its leading sectors". The jury highlighted that Indra genuinely represents "the best values and principles of innovation in Spain."

Since its creation, Indra has had innovation at the heart of its business strategy as a key element of its competitiveness. Its commitment and continuous involvement have made it one of the leading companies in its sector in innovation in Europe, both for its investment in R+D+i and for the value contribution of its innovation management model.

In recent years, Indra has developed a new open, agile and flexible innovation model to expand and reinforce its connection with innovation technology ecosystems at a global level: startups, entrepreneurs with ideas, university research groups that are experimenting with emerging technologies and Indra's own professionals, who are a valuable source of ideas.

Through Indraventures, its vehicle for strengthening its relationship with this entire entrepreneurial ecosystem and financing initiatives, Indra analyzes nearly a thousand startups per year, forms collaboration agreements with dozens of these SMEs and invests in many others in order to help accelerate their projects with digital business models. The company thus strengthens its role as a driving force for R+D+i, also through its collaboration with universities, technology centers and other institutions of knowledge and innovation, as well as by stimulating the intra-enterprise of its own professionals.

The ultimate goal of this new innovation model is to reinforce Indra's technological leadership, generate value for clients, stimulate the talent of professionals and make innovation one of the pillars of its cultural transformation, along with others such as diversity, training, flexibility or the commitment to young talent.

Regarding investment in innovation, in the last year, Indra has invested 225 million euros in R+D+i. This amount increases to 1.713 billion euros in the last 10 years and exceeds the 2.89 billion euros dedicated to R+D+i since 2000; which places it among the companies in its sector that are most committed to innovation at a European level, according to the EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard index. These numbers show a great intensity and duration of the innovative effort, since they imply that Indra dedicates between 5% and 8% of its sales to innovation annually.

In its search for excellence and continuous improvement, Indra wanted to certify its new innovation model, according to Spanish quality standards, UNE 166002, and European standards, CEN/TS 16555-1. These certifications prove that Indra works to guarantee optimal innovation management that contributes to the creation value, so that its products and services respond to the new needs of both its clients and society. They are also an element of added and differential value in comparison with the competition.

Own solutions with a strong innovative component

Indra is completely oriented to the creation, design and development of its own solutions and business models with a strong innovative component, which generate a high impact and rewards both in the organization and in the various markets in which it operates. This commitment to innovation allows us to offer cutting-edge solutions at the service of sustainability.

For example, in the field of transport, Indra promotes innovation to achieve more sustainable, safe, reliable, resilient and accessible mobility and infrastructure. In addition, the company has a unique experience in the sector with more than 2,500 projects developed in over 50 countries, more than 100 cities and more than 500 clients.

Indra has led and is leading some of the main European innovation initiatives that are moving towards the digitalization of transport and the use of new intelligent solutions based on these cutting-edge technologies, such as Shif2Rail and the Transforming Transport macro-project.

Regarding air traffic management, 85% of passengers from the five continents fly thanks to Indra's technology. Indra is the only company in the world capable of responding to the global air traffic challenges with its own state-of-the-art technology.

The company is a key partner in the SESAR R+D+i program to create what is known as the Single European Sky, which works to reduce emissions per flight by 10% between 2012 and 2035 thanks to improvements in air traffic management systems, and is a leading technology partner of the iTEC Alliance, made up of some of the main European navigation service suppliers.

Indra is also the only Spanish company that appears among the top 100 Defence companies in the world and has a high level of international recognition for the development of critical projects for the national defence of the countries for which it works, for its participation in major European programs and within the framework of NATO, for its proven export capacity and for a human team with high added value.

In addition, Indra is the second supplier of avionics for the Eurofighter, one of the most advanced fighters in the world, and plays a key role in the development of the next generation of air combat systems, among which EuroDrone and the FCAS (Future Combat Air System) stand out, the largest joint European Defence program to date and the most ambitious in terms of technological development. In the latter, which will represent a huge development opportunity for Spanish industry, Indra is the Spanish industrial coordinator.

Indra is also a technological partner of some of the most advanced and ambitious European space programs and of the main clients in the simulation field.
