  • The TM Forum panel of judges has singled out Minsait IoT Platform Sofia2 - the IoT platform with big data and cloud capabilities from Indra's digital transformation unit - as a highly innovative solution to drive city transformation, capable of generating value for the general public, delivering on the requirements of businesses, and underpinning sustainability

Indra has won the “Solutions Provider Innovations” award, part of the Smart City Excellence Awards at TM Forum, the global forum for digital transformation. The company received the accolade at the Smart City InFocus awards ceremony on September 19, held in the city of Yinchuan (China).

The panel of judges, comprised of industry leaders and reputed analysts, recognized Minsait IoT Platform Sofia2, the Minsait Internet of Things platform with big data and cloud capabilities, as a global technological leader that is driving city transformation via the development of solutions aimed at generating value for the general public, while also delivering on the needs of local businesses and propelling sustainable development. The platform has attracted numerous accolades and is considered an industry leader by Gartner.

This is the second consecutive year that TM Forum has honored the platform. In 2016 Indra won the "Open Digital Ecosystem Platform of the Year" award, in recognition of the potential for Minsait IoT Platform Sofia2 to drive the creation of open ecosystems that support partnership between different corporations and organizations.  In the words of the judges, "Indra has worked consistently to create a platform business model that helps cities to offer key services, while inviting third parties to innovate within the ecosystem".

This year Indra was the only Spanish winner in any of the three final categories, competing against major multinationals from all over the world. The judges pointed to major success stories for the Indra smart city solution, based on Minsait IoT Platform Sofia2, such as the platform that acts as "an urban brain" for the cities of A Coruña and Logroño; a project under development together with Ecoembes in smart waste management, seeking to optimize its successful model for packaging, paper and cardboard waste nationwide; and the pilot programs run with CPSE LABS and Evacuate, two major European innovation projects.  

At the event Indra also signed the "City As a Platform" manifesto, an initiative run by TM Forum that recognizes a series of principles aimed at ensuring the use of open standards to help drive the creation of an open, flexible and interoperable city platform. The TM Forum Smart City Excellence Awards aim to showcase the leading providers of global services and solutions that are paving the way for the adoption of best practices and standards that will benefit the industry as a whole and digital ecosystems in particular.

In the field of smart cities and smart territories, Minsait IoT Platform Sofia2 constitutes the foundations of Indra's smart city solution, the mission of which is to secure intelligent management of all city services and solutions, allowing for more efficient operations, monitoring and control of results, and optimization of public services.

The world-leading Coruña Smart City project saw the Minsait IoT Platform Sofia2 deployed to support integrated management of all services in this Galician city, and has since become a worldwide benchmark in the field. Selected indicators: smart irrigation in city parks has secured water savings of 25%, energy consumption at public buildings connected to the system is down by 20%, while improved water management has likewise cut water consumption by 20%.

Meanwhile, Indra is now partnering with the Logroño city council to drive the city's transformation via deployment of Minsait IoT Sofia2, as well as an array of vertical solutions.

The platform is also making a significant contribution to the digital transformation initiative currently being run by Indra for the Colombian National Training Service (SENA). According to an initial study involving 28 SENA facilities, the savings in terms of energy bills could stand at around 25%.

The Minsait IoT Platform Sofia2 technological platform has also paved the way for construction of highly innovative solutions for smart cities, via major European innovation programs. One example is the Cyber Physical Systems Engineering (CPSE) Labs R&D project, which includes development of a smart water management system capable of cutting water use by up to 40%.

The platform has also helped to slash emergency evacuation times for major infrastructure by between 25% and 56%, as part of the e-Vacuate project. Pilot tests were conducted at the Anoeta soccer stadium and the Bilbao subway system (Spain), as well as Athens airport and on a cruise ship on the French coast.
