CRETA: Control of Mobility and Reduction of Traffic Emissions

Description of the Project

CRETA is born as a catalyst for synergies between 5G technology, traffic emissions measurement, and advanced analytics through artificial intelligence for optimal traffic mobility management. This project aims to integrate sensors and advanced telecommunications to create a new global system for monitoring and intelligent management of road traffic, with the objective of promoting sustainable and efficient mobility and reducing urban and interurban transport emissions.

The main objectives addressed are as follows:

  1. Creation of a 5G system capable of real-time interconnection of data between sensors and vehicles.
  2. Development of a variable pricing system based on the usage and external environmental consequences produced by each vehicle.
  3. Monitoring emission reduction (road traffic) with autonomous remote sensing systems connected to the 5G network.

CRETA will carry out 3 pilots in 3 areas of Spain:

  • Border Control - Irun:
    A tool will be developed to evaluate and classify trucks based on their real emissions, allowing for individualized tariffs and activating real-time alerts to the police in case of illegal manipulations. With the support of 5G, a complete connection is established that enables instant communication between sensors and the communication systems of the authorities, generating immediate alerts for possible vehicles with manipulated anti-pollution systems and testing the implementation of emissions-based free-flow tolls for each truck.
  • Variable Pricing - Barcelona:
    A dynamic toll system will be established for large cities using 5G technology and V2X connectivity. Vehicles transmit data about their emissions, which is processed in the cloud to calculate personalized tariffs. Alerts and notifications based on emissions and traffic conditions will be generated to recommend actions such as reducing speed or changing lanes.
  • Urban Mobility Management and Low Emission Zones (ZBE) - Madrid:
    This pilot will feature a comprehensive system for monitoring, analyzing, and intelligent management of urban mobility between Madrid and Alcobendas. Different remote emission measurement systems, artificial vision cameras, and license plate readers equipped with 5G nodes will be deployed to comprehensively monitor road traffic and its real emissions.

Indra´s Rol

Indra focuses its efforts on three lines of development for the implementation of innovative ITS systems, supported by the use of 5G communication. First, they will seek to implement a satellite toll system, whose main objective will be the detection of vehicle movement traces to establish precise toll charges for highway sections. To achieve this, the company will focus on communication between the control center and connected vehicles, allowing the exchange of real-time positioning information.

Additionally, a key feature of the project will be the use of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC). Indra will implement a filtering process in the MEC before sending the data, ensuring that only relevant and high-quality information is transmitted and processed. Furthermore, the DAVAO Cloud/MEC solution will be deployed in the cloud, enabling efficient monitoring, control, and processing of the sensors involved in the project.

In addition, within CRETA, Indra will pursue the integration of emission and noise sensors with the HORUS platform. This will enable the generation of penalties for excess pollution, establishing a solid legal basis to address this issue. Moreover, a blacklist-style alert system will be implemented to identify vehicles with high levels of pollution. This will provide automatic support to the RSD sensor, which measures emissions in real-time, allowing timely intervention by the relevant authorities.

In terms of data analysis, Indra will focus on exploiting the information obtained from the sensors. Through Edge services, data volume will be reduced, and significant analytics will be extracted. This will include the identification of movement patterns of polluting vehicles, providing valuable information for traffic management and environmental policy implementation. Additionally, data from emission and noise sensors will be cross-referenced with other traffic sensors, allowing for a comprehensive and accurate understanding of the situation.

Furthermore, Indra will coordinate the pilot project for Urban Mobility Management and Low Emission Zones (ZBE) in Madrid, where the technologies developed within the project will be tested.
