Specification, Design and Manufacture 3D Mobile Deployable Radar

Project Description

The project consists on a 3D Mobile Deployable Radar system, that will consist of a 3D primary radar and an interrogator IFF Identification Friend or Foe, both long-range, with a performance that is far ahead of the state of the art for similar systems and radars of fixed location and including the feature of portability that will imply the evolution in the technologies that have been used so far in the manufacture and design of radar systems.

Indra's Role

INDRA SISTEMAS S.A. will coordinate and execute all the necessary activities to achieve the project tasks, being the main ones:

  • Project Management and Coordination
  • Analysis of 3D Mobile Deployable Radar System Requirements
  • Design of the elements of development of the 3D Mobile Deployable Radar System including: the Row  Antenna, the High Power Amplifier, the Digital Beam-Forming Module, the secondary radar amplifier and source, the mechanical prototypes and other elements of process, to demonstrate deployability and transportability always meeting the operational requirements.
  • Development and Validation of the 3D Mobile Deployable Radar demonstrators

Universities and Technological Centres

Indra has not planned the participation of universities and technology centers beyond usual collaborations.
 

Technologies used

The project represents a major technological challenge due to the fulfillment of strict deployment / redeployment and transportability targets, at the same time, it has to increase the transmitted power and antenna aperture to maximize the scope, accuracy and resolution in order to offer a final product that meets the demand and position of Indra in a privileged position within the industry.

The main technologies and design methodology are:

  • Large antenna for a wide range coverage, meeting the  requirements of transportability and deployment to study new materials and composites to keep the radio-electric and inscrutability conditions of the rows while decreasing the weight and including the folding process.
  • High-Power Amplifiers to obtain a higher volumetric density than in the state of the art radars, fulfilling this way the specified range and the weight loss necessary to achieve the transportability requisites of the system.
  • Beam forming and digital reception on a test generation digital RF beam reception in the digital domain with the objectives of simplification of traditional architecture and weight, improved performance thanks to its linearity, improved quantification by using components digital art and the elimination of feedback and versatility to increase the number of diagrams of receipt.
  • Making compatible the civilian with the military way within a secondary radar system as well as the inclusion of a greater versatility in terms of antenna patterns and the quality of the modulations in the processing of data.
  • Design-looking overall system weight and reduced volume and meet the requirements of transportability and deployability without losing any functionality with respect to fixed speed cameras.
  • Detailed study of thermal behavior and location of development elements to ensure compliance with the requirement of operating temperature.

This project is the complete design of a completely new radar, which has some features that exceed the state of the art and includes concepts and materials that have not been introduced into this market.
