LITERACY - onLIne porTal for E-learning and suppoRting sociAl inClusion of people with dYslexia

Project Description

The Literacy project is a European wide research project funded by the European Commission in the area of ICT under the FP7 Programme.

The aim of the project is to create an advanced online portal to support the inclusion of dyslexic youth and adults in society. This will be done by providing personalized e-learning programs and tools for managing tasks at home, work or school.

Indra's Role

Indra is the Coordinator and the main technological partner

Universities and Technological Centres

Technologies used

The LITERACY Portal is enabled by several novel technologies and the integration of existing tools. All tools which users will access including the specialized interface will be in four languages to start off with English, Hungarian, Czech and Hebrew. The System will be composed of the following components:

Perimetral Security; checks Master Server access permissions, including physical and logical actions required.

Master Server; hosts the web portal and the database. The server is master over the other system components, so the origin of transactions is always produced from it. Development of web portal components, will de done by license free and open source tools.

The website contains the processes and services required for the functionality of the portal itself, the business logic necessary for the exchange of information between different system tools, and the Community Zone content. The web portal will be developed based in international standards for developing enterprise applications, as J2EE platform.

The database storage will take care of data access and user profiles to the website, the information for the data flow between different tools of the system, and the Community Zone.

Internal Security; it checks that the required services are only accessed from the master server, and ensures that they do so with the necessary quality of service.

Slave Server; it contains many Virtual PCs, each running a license for each commercial product (e-learning, assessment tool, text to speech, etc).

More information

The R&D of this project can be broken down into three blocks:

1. Provide e-learning Portal for independent online use

  • Assessment and user analysis: The adaptation of a full battery of diagnostic tools including specific dyslexia assessment instruments complimented by cognitive and behavioural assessment will be produced and translated to accommodate local culture test to yield an online diagnostic area of the Portal
  • Personalized content: adaptation of existing e-learning tools including: skill building, learning, functionality, assistance tools, training etc, be selected by experts.
  • Community Zone: content and services for dyslexic people and stakeholders. This area enabling the interaction of all stakeholders of the dyslexia community including dyslexic people, their parents or relatives, employers and care-givers.

2. Develop Underlying Technology

  • Technology to perform automated analysis of data and provide feedback based on results of analysis
    • Development of algorithms to assess comprehensive diagnostic tests and all user interaction with the system including reaction time etc.
    • Generation of automated reports on type of dyslexia using language which is friendly, supportive and most importantly understandable to a dyslexic lay person.
    • Development of algorithms to determine best course of action for teaching and strengthening skills of the individual user based on diagnosis and on interaction.
    • Generation of automated reports including suggestion to seek human intervention.
  • Technology for optimized interaction with dyslexic users including specialized user interface tools.
  • Technology for building community for target population enabling:
    • User interaction with other dyslexic people in a forum which can be directed.
    • Access to desired content and services within dyslexic community and other communities virtual or real
    • Automated tracking and specialized presentation of specified content based on user choice of subject, sources, frequency of updates etc.
    • Adaptation of specific content to format and interface of Portal thus rendering it 'readable' and receivable/acceptable to dyslexic users.
    • Development of infrastructure for integrating existing assistive technologies
  • Technology for building web Portal enabling:
    • Managing profiles, permissions and users, allowing an exhaustive control of data accesses to each area of the portal.
    • Specific software for content management
    • Areas designed to allocate advertisements

3. Build the system: Testing, integration, validation, optimization, translation

  • All of the components will be tested by interim users, and by end users of both age categories: youth and adults.
  • Components will be integrated and the online Portal will be built. The testing phase will include verification of diagnosis and efficacy of content, as well as evaluation and optimization of the technology. Testing algorithms for selecting optimal e-learning programs, for monitoring progress and decision making for moving to next level, repeating same exercise, same level but different exercise or changing track.
  • Questionnaires will be implemented in the portal and will be filled out by every user after finishing work at the portal during the market validation. Satisfaction with the service, evaluation of individual exercises, improvement suggestions and satisfaction with the maintenance and solution of the service will be assessed.

Longitudinal non R&D activities include Dissemination and exploitation as well as Management.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no FP7-288596
