ENGRT: EU Next Generation Rotorcraft Technologies Project

Description of the Project

The project “EU Next Generation Rotorcraft Technologies Project” (ENGRT) will focus on the next generation EU military rotorcrafts. The project will include the analysis of future needs, key future rotorcraft features and capabilities, alternative rotorcraft platforms, flight demonstrators and simulators. The project will also produce a military rotorcraft technology roadmap, strategies for modularity and manufacturing, life-cycle analysis and maintenance concepts.

Provide the tasks and documentation related to part of the package 7 “ENGRT Platform Concepts validation and assessment”

Specifically, tasks and documentation of Battlefield Simulations, consisting of implementing the mathematical models to execute "Fast Simulation", in a battlefield environment. Including the required infrastructure and ensuring that specific capabilities (previously defined in other work packages) and processes are adapted, with established confidentiality and intellectual property rights. All this according to success criteria previously established in the project.

Technologies Employed 

  • Fast Rotorcraft Architectures: investigating pros and cons of adopting fast rotorcraft architectures as a means to comply with forthcoming CONOPS and requirements of the European armed forces is the key activity of this study.
  • Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA) that will contribute to the standardization being pursued at European level as well as worldwide to simplify complex systems integration processes.
  • Reduction of number of LRUs: host the specific software developed for a dedicated task into a common hardware, eventually just adding an additional electronic board into the LRU.
  • Advance materials and structural solutions: to adopt the results of the studies being performed in EDF on new materials.
  • Hybrid/Innovative Propulsion: next generation rotorcrafts will mandatorily need to comply with the decarbonisation objectives set forth by the European Nations for 2035 and 2050. To this extent, ENGRT strongly perceives the need to investigate in depth the enhancements that are to be expected for the propulsion system in the next few years.
  • Future weapons and self-protection: ENGRT will necessarily explore the innovations that are rapidly emerging for both rotorcraft protection and strike power.
